{"id":1665,"date":"2026-04-08T13:31:25","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T20:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/?p=1665"},"modified":"2026-04-09T10:28:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T17:28:30","slug":"youth-voice-eve-valdez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/es\/posts\/youth-voice-eve-valdez\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth Voice: Eve Valdez"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At Open Doors, youth voice isn\u2019t an add-on; it\u2019s foundational to everything we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open Doors is a training program that equips youth-serving adults with tools to engage young people in conversations around substance use and other behavioral health issues in a non-judgmental, relationship-centered way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this youth spotlight, Open Doors Youth Council member Eve Valdez shares how her lived experience shapes her approach to healing, advocacy, and supporting young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re proud to share that Eve was recently selected as a recipient of the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/humanservices.ucdavis.edu\/events\/partnerships-well-being-institute\/2026-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Youth Champion Award<\/u><\/a> by the Partnerships for Well-Being Institute. <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">She will be recognized for her commitment to improving outcomes for children and youth at the conference titled \u00ab<strong>Navigating the Tide: Connecting Our Child, Youth and Family-Serving Systems for a Stronger Future<\/strong>.\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Reflections by Eve Valdez<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My name is Eve Valdez, and I am a member of the Open Doors Youth Council. Beyond Open Doors, I am a lived experience expert who focuses on foster youth rights, community advocacy, and mothering my three young children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On Love &amp; Healing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I entered this work because love is deeply important to me. I grew up in severely traumatic environments, which shaped my understanding of what it means to feel broken. I worked very hard to understand what it takes to become whole again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through my journey, I discovered that <em>the only true antidote was love<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loving myself was very difficult at first. I had to confront parts of myself shaped by my experiences and learn what needed to change. That process became the foundation for how I love others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I came to understand that people who are hurting need to learn that they are worth fighting for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shaping Open Doors Through Lived Experience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Being part of the Open Doors Youth Council has allowed us to help shape a curriculum that centers on love rather than discouragement, force, and belittlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It provides a platform to ensure we offer real support and encouragement, rather than reprimanding people who are already hurting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Young People Need Adults to See<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All I ever needed was for someone to tell me that I was born to be greater and that I am capable of becoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Open Doors Youth Council helps instill patience and a different perspective on youth from diverse backgrounds. It creates a space for providers to no longer see young people as a \u201cpiece of work,\u201d but as a piece of art \u2014 helping youth see that image within themselves and honor their own beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up in foster care and on the streets has taught me to love unconditionally, no matter where someone is in their healing journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some may believe they do not deserve healing. Some may not know how to heal. And some may not think they need healing at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Open Doors Youth Council equips communities with the tools to meet young people with love at every stage of life \u2014 through their lowest lows and highest highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Hurt people love people because someone loved them first.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u2014 Eve Valdez<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Eve<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Eve Valdez is a member of the Open Doors Youth Council and a passionate advocate for foster youth and underserved communities.
