{"id":1702,"date":"2026-05-05T15:47:29","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T22:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/?p=1702"},"modified":"2026-05-05T15:57:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T22:57:39","slug":"train-the-trainer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/es\/posts\/train-the-trainer\/","title":{"rendered":"Building the Next Generation of Open Doors Facilitators"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Inside Our First Train-the-Trainer Cohort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This past April in Sacramento, a new program came to life: Open Doors hosted its very first <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/become-a-facilitator\/\">Train-the-Trainer (TtT)<\/a> cohort<\/strong>, bringing together youth-serving professionals ready to take the next step: not just participating in the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/training\/\" id=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/training\/\">Open Doors Core Training<\/a><\/strong>, but learning how to <strong>facilitate it for others<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over two days, this group stepped into a different kind of learning experience. They went beyond content and into practice, reflection, and growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Participant to Facilitator<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The journey into TtT begins with the Core Training. That foundational experience introduces youth-serving adults to the Open Doors approach: relationship-centered engagement, harm reduction, restorative justice, and cultural humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Train-the-Trainer builds on that foundation but shifts the perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As Open Doors Senior Facilitator James Freeman explains:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of people come out of a core training thinking, \u2018<em>This is great. I feel more equipped, and I want to share it with others.<\/em>\u2019 Train-the-Trainer gives you the framework for how to actually do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants don\u2019t just revisit the material; they go deeper. They explore where the curriculum comes from, why it\u2019s designed the way it is, and how to guide others through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learning the \u201cWhat\u201d &amp; the \u201cWhy\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest differences between Core Training and Train-the-Trainer is what happens behind the scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Core Training, participants experience activities such as Restorative Justice Circles and guided discussions. In TtT, the \u201cwhy\u201d behind these activities is unpacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why a circle? Why a talking piece? Why this sequence of activities?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not scripted,\u201d James explains. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want something where someone just reads off a page. Adults can\u2019t give youth what they haven\u2019t experienced. And importantly, they learn how to model those values rather than just talking about them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Practice, Feedback, and Real Growth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most transformative moments often come on day two: Participants are paired up and asked to facilitate a portion of the curriculum themselves for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a moment that can bring up nerves, self-doubt, and a lot of internal dialogue. But it\u2019s also where confidence begins to shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can see people go from a minus ten to a plus fifty,\u201d James shared. \u201cThey think, <em>\u2018I\u2019m not going to be good at this,\u2019<\/em> and then they do really well. And suddenly it\u2019s like, <em>\u2018I could do this.\u2019<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2646-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2646-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2646-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2646-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2646-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2646-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2646-1320x881.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each facilitation is followed by structured, specific feedback from peers. This highlights strengths that participants often don\u2019t see in themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what becomes clear quickly: there\u2019s no one \u201cright\u201d way to facilitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo facilitator looked the same,\u201d James said. \u201cDifferent styles, different strengths \u2014 and all of them worked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More Than a Training<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While TtT is designed to prepare facilitators, many participants walk away with something broader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alina Sanchez<\/strong>, Senior Project Manager with Open Doors, joined the cohort to better understand the program from a communications perspective, but left with something more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting to come out ready to facilitate. In fact, I was convinced I would never facilitate a training myself. The TtT program was not only a professional development opportunity that met all of my expectations, but also an enormous personal growth opportunity. I left feeling like I could and would facilitate a training myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That blend of professional and personal growth showed up across the cohort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rebeca Sanchez<\/strong>, Workforce Development Facilitator at Community Solutions, reflected on the sense of community:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt felt like I was sharing space with a group of people who were rooting for me to succeed. The skills I learned don\u2019t just stay within Open Doors. Facilitation is something you take with you everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for <strong>Sharon Nilsson<\/strong>, Director of Apprenticeship at the Catalyst Center, the experience connected directly to a bigger vision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing part of the first cohort felt like being on the ground floor of something truly impactful. This training aligns deeply with our mission to build a behavioral health workforce rooted in connection, equity, and real-world skill building.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Train Facilitators?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2495-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2495-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2495-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2495-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2495-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2495-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2495-1320x880.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At its core, Train-the-Trainer is about scale \u2014 but not just in numbers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s about expanding a network of people who can carry this work forward in their own communities, organizations, and systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a physical limit to how many people we can train ourselves,\u201d James said. \u201cWhen you build a network of facilitators, that reach becomes exponential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of relying on external trainers, organizations can build internal capacity by embedding these practices into their day-to-day work with youth\u2026 And the ripple effect is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Bigger Picture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there\u2019s one idea that sits at the heart of Open Doors, it\u2019s this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf every young person had one safe adult they could talk to at their moment of greatest struggle,\u201d James shared, \u201cit would change everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Train-the-Trainer is one way of moving toward that reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By equipping more adults to facilitate these conversations (and to model openness, curiosity, and care), we expand the chances that every young person has someone they can turn to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2396-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1709\" srcset=\"https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2396-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2396-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2396-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2396-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2396-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/opendoorstraining.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2396-1320x881.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sacramento cohort was just the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With additional cohorts already underway across California, the Train-the-Trainer program is growing quickly and bringing together diverse professionals from schools, community organizations, behavioral health, and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as that network grows, so does the potential for impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because this work isn\u2019t just about delivering a training;
